The point is more that they were able to cut their energy consumption by 40%. They were cut off from their main, economical and renewable resource, and rather than burn more oil (and pay five times the price for it) to power their lives, they just cut back.
If we all can cut back, then our dependency on energy itself is reduced a lot too. If we drive down demand, the price will be driven down.

That’s great! However, my question is this; Why should we have to reduced our use from a renewable resource?
